Pathfinders Neuromuscular Alliance

Featured Project:

In 2023 we were commissioned by a new client to produce a video that explain the struggles that young people face when entering adulthood with the rare muscle-weakening condition known as Duchenne.

The project was run by Dr Suzanne Glover, the lead community researcher at Pathfinders.

Here’s what she had to say.

"Pathfinders Neuromuscular Alliance is immensely proud of the video produced by Inertia Creative. We first spoke to Josh at Inertia Creative during the application stage of our funding bid to create this video. Josh worked with us very closely from this early stage right through to the public launch of the video content. As an organisation relatively new to creating material on this scale, Josh was brilliant at helping us manage the various stages of production and project deadlines. We felt immensely supported by Josh. He was readily available for questions and queries relating to the process and the content of our video – making the entire process seem more manageable"

The filmmaking journey for me was incredibly eye. The main focus was around the people and the stories they had to tell. There were a few points where I almost had to stop recording because of the tears in my eyes. But wasn’t all sorrow.  Their outlook on life is stronger than anything I’ve ever known and their push to live life to it’s fullest has forever changed the way I look at the world.

Suzanne continued to say:

We will be forever grateful for the professional, striking and emotionally hard-hitting content that Josh created for our organisation. We believe that this is due to Josh’s creative skills weighted equally with his sensitive, caring and kind nature. Josh had a very relaxed and calming approach to collecting footage with the individuals in our video which really reflected in the honest accounts spoken in the content. Our staff, academics and peer researchers were put at ease and rightfully given the platform to speak about their experiences by Josh.

I met such a diverse group of people, each giving me an insight into their own worlds. In Newcastle, I got to witness Alex practice with his band, which just so happens to be the first Duchenne fronted band in the country. In London, Benjamin drove me to the supermarket in his van with no steering wheel. In Manchester, Liam introduced me to the Man United Powerchair Football team. In the space of two weeks I felt like a different person and before long, I realised these sorts of stories are the ones I’m destined to tell.

Suzanne continues:

Our research concerns entering adulthood for those living with a rare muscle weakening condition. It aims to shed new light on barriers facing young people by placing young adults with lived experience at the centre of the research process. As a result, our research taps into many of the intricate and sensitive topics relating to becoming an adult in the face of continual muscle weakening progression and disabling social barriers. Accurately capturing the narratives of young people involved in our research was always going to be a thoughtfully challenging process. Josh worked with our co-researchers closely to understand their experiences in order to create this piece which they feel very accurately brings to life our research findings.
